Hardening Fertilization and Nutrient Loading of Conifer Seedlings

چکیده

Continuing to fertilize bareroot and container seedlings during the hardening process (from cessation of height growth until lifting) can improve seedling viability. The process of fertilizing during hardening has many names, but in the last decade a new term, nutrient loading, has come into use. The process of nutrient loading seedlings leads to luxury consumption indicated by foliar nitrogen (N) concentrations > 2.5%. Increasing foliar nutrient concentrations during hardening can result in increased cold hardiness, seedlings with thicker stems, heavier root systems, better root-toshoot ratios, higher foliar N concentrations and contents, and the potential for better survival and growth on the outplanting site.

Steady-state nutrition of Pinus resinosa seedlings: response to nutrient loading, irrigation and hardening regimes.

To test effects of fertilization on late-season growth and nutrient content of container-grown red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.), seedlings were subjected to a factorial combination of two fertilization regimes (exponentially increasing concentrations providing 25 (1N) and 75 (3N) mg N seedling(-1), respectively) and two irrigation regimes (well-watered and water-stressed) followed by drought-hard...

Plant Nutrient Testing and Analysis in Forest and Conservation Nurseries

Supplying mineral nutrients at the proper rate and in the proper balance has a major effect on seedling growth rate but, more importantly, on seedling quality. In addition, mounting concerns about fertilizer pollution are increasing awareness of the benefits of precision fertilization. Because they reflect actual mineral nutrient uptake, plant tissue tests are the best way to monitor a fertiliz...

Nursery response of container Pinus palustris seedlings to nitrogen supply and subsequent effects on outplanting performance

Container longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) seedlings often survive and grow better after outplanting than bareroot seedlings. Because of this, most longleaf pine are now produced in containers. Little is known about nursery fertilization effects on the quality of container longleaf pine seedlings and how that influences outplanting performance. We compared various fertilization rates (0.5, 1, 2,...

Combined effects of cotyledon excision and nursery fertilization on root growth, nutrient status and outplanting performance of Quercus variabilis container seedlings

Artificial excision of the distal part of acorns in order to promote germination is well researched in oak seedling cultivation studies. However, studies of combined effects of cotyledon excision and nursery fertilization on container seedlings are lacking, especially for seedling root growth and outplanting performance. This study aimed to explore the main effects of cotyledon excision on Quer...

Water and nutrients alter herbaceous competitive effects on tree seedlings in a semi-arid savanna

1. Globally, both climatic patterns and nitrogen deposition rates show directional changes over time. It is uncertain how woody seedlings, which coexist with herbaceous plants in savannas, respond to concurrent changes in water and nutrient availability. 2. We investigated competition effects between herbaceous vegetation and tree seedlings ( Colophospermum mopane ) under changed water and nutr...
